Disaster Response Project in Kandal
Habitat for Humanity Cambodia implemented another successful Disaster Response project in Leuk Deak district, Kandal province on June 15 catering to 85 families affected by the 2011 flooding and the flooding early this year.
The 85 families living along the Tonle Sap River were provided shelter repair and hygiene kits. HFH Cambodia DR Ad-hoc team also took the opportunity to educate families on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and with proper basic house repair. The team also demonstrated the proper use of the tools and materials provided in the shelter repair kits.
The stilt house of Sat Kah collapsed due to the strong winds and strong flood flow. When asked about her experience she said “All eight of us jumped out of the house when we felt that the house was slowly falling apart. We ran to the roadside for safety.” Sat Kah and her family moved to a nearby plot. Their temporary house requires repair.
Another beneficiary, Hoeun Nang, said, “I feel very happy that my family is able to receive the tools. My husband can use the ‘tarpaulin’ to cover our damaged roof and wall as we always have to deal with leaking when it rains. We will be able to sleep better at night. He will also be able to use the tools to fix other damages in our small house. I am also thankful that we now have a better container for drinking water. The kettle will help me make sure that I am drinking clean water especially now that I am pregnant. I also learned today that drinking boiled water and living clean is really important.
Apart from providing the families with the immediate help they need, the DR project strongly prepared the families for the coming monsoon. Mr. Chheoun Bonnaroth, the Vice District Governor of Leuk Deak district expressed his thanks to HFH Cambodia for the flood recovery and preparedness support it provided their district to during the distribution. Representatives from Cambodia Red Cross, World Vision Cambodia, and local authorities also attended the distribution.
