Habitat for Humanity Cambodia Case Study Presented on ASEAN Foundation, AIM, ADB Case Forum
Habitat for Humanity Cambodia case study was presented on July 22, 2011 in a Case Forum by the Asian Institute of Management and ASEAN Foundation in an effort to highlight poverty alleviation initiatives among member countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations.
The project “Mainstreaming Poverty Alleviation Initiatives among ASEAN-member Countries” was designed in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aiming to improve poverty alleviation projects through development interventions.
Representatives from the academe, diplomatic corps, and private and non-government sectors attended the event, including Bernadette Bolo-Duthy, National Country Director, who served as the main resource person during the preparation of the cases study on HFHC and Wayne Bacale Design, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Manager for Habitat Asia-Pacific.
Bernadette Bolo-Duthy said “Habitat for Humanity Cambodia aims to reach out to different avenues to communicate and emphasize Habitat Cambodia Case Study Presented on ASEAN Foundation, AIM, ADB Case Forum the importance of its programs in the hope that it will contribute to bridging the poverty alleviation initiative gaps between the developed and less developed countries. It also contributes to our ‘learnings’ as a growing organization.”
The assembly highlighted how various sectors in the ASEAN region are working towards addressing poverty alleviation in their respective communities. The event harmonized poverty mitigation initiatives in ASEAN through sharing of information, development of knowledge products, and networking.
The case study on Habitat for Humanity Cambodia featured its program initiatives in helping lift people out of poverty by providing access to better housing and facilities through housing finance, and providing opportunity to build-on their skills for income generation.
Habitat for Humanity’s concept of pro-poor housing finance stirred further discussions amongst attendees, which presented an opportunity for HFHC to demonstrate and expand on its fee structure where access to no-profit, low-interest mortgages, the use of volunteer labor and sweat equity, and donations in cash and in kind make affordable housing possible for poor families.
Also included in the case compilation is the Habitat for Humanity partnership with World Concern Myanmar on its rebuilding project after Cyclone Nargis.
The case forum was held at the Asian Institute of Management Center for Development Management in Makati City, Philippines.
